Lelek, A. (1987). Threatened fishes of Europe. Aula-Verlag, Wiesbaden (Germany).

The primary aim of this volume is to provide a general review of the freshwater fish fauna of Europe. Attention is directed to the status of the survival of each species. Wherever possible, suggestions have been made of immediate protection of individual species. However, the actual, modern conservation has to be based on the protection of species communities and their environments. It is hoped this publication will stimulate the effort to overcome the existing gaps in the knowledge of the fish communities in rivers, and particularly of their dynamics in artificially modified environments. Past experience has proved that exaggerated attention to a few "useful" species influences the remaining fish community negatively. A separation of the "utilitarian" and "conservation" usages of the aquatic environment and its fish fauna is thus called for.
