Figure 15. Monthly transport of nitrate past Pool 14 (Clinton, Iowa) in the floods of 1993 (dashed line) and 2001 (green solid line) as shown by Long Term Resource Monitoring Program data. The 2001 flood closely followed the historical timing of spring floods in the Upper Mississippi River System, and delivered more nitrate in April through June than the 1993 flood. It was followed by an area of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico that exceeded that seen in 1993 and set a new record.
