In a Nation endowed with magnificent water resources, the Mississippi and Missouri River Watersheds (Watershed) are unparalleled. The Mississippi River links several states to the Gulf Coast export markets, and the entire Watershed supports a tremendous range of uses. Commercial navigation, recreation, fish, and wildlife all flourish within the Watershed. In addition, millions of residents rely on basin water for public and industrial supplies, power plant cooling, wastewater assimilation, and other uses.
Under this strategy, three U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) science centersthe Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, the Columbia Environmental Research Center, and the National Wetlands Research Centerwill collaborate on the development of a watershed data collection and documentation effort to support data dissemination and decision support systems. In the context of this effort, decision support means providing partners, policy makers, resource managers, and civil authorities with standardized information in the most usable format and with the appropriate tools for analysis. Efforts will focus on developing common standards, databases, and tools for use by resource managers, scientists, and decision makers.
Project was completed in September 2001.
