Sampling the dominant benthic macroinvertebrates of Mississippi River Eckblad, J. 1992. Sampling the dominant benthic macroinvertebrates of Mississippi River backwater lakes. Report by Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Environmental Management Technical Center, Onalaska, Wisconsin, December 1992. EMTC 92-S014. 13 pp. (NTIS #PB94-114477) ABSTRACT Sampling studies were conducted during the summer of 1990 to help evaluate how many samples should be taken to adequately describe the benthos from backwater lakes of the Upper Mississippi River. Sampling was restricted to open-water locations from backwater lakes known to have finer sediment substrata (i.e., silt and clays). It was also know that the presence of submerged or emergent vegetation would influence benthos numbers, and sampling from these areas was avoided. The theoretical basis for estimating sampling accuracy with increased sample size is described in the Appendix.
