<descript>
The Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP) monitors aquatic vegetation in four navigation pools of the Upper Mississippi River (Pools 4, 8, 13, and 26), the La Grange navigation pool on the Illinois River, and the first 12 miles of the Illinois River above its confluence with the Mississippi. Specific locations and timing of monitoring are directed by the spatial and temporal patterns of the vegetation. For example, aquatic vegetation monitoring is not conducted in the open river reach since this life form is generally lacking. In the other navigation pools, field surveys are conducted during the growing season to assess the distribution and abundance of aquatic vegetation. Stratified random sampling procedures are used to determine which sites will be surveyed. These data are made available through the Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center’s Web site (http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/data_library/vegetation/vegetation_page.html).
<purpose>The objectives of monitoring aquatic vegetation in the UMRS are to accurately characterize the quantity and distribution in individual aquatic area strata as well as entire pools, and to detect trends over time. The Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center administers the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP), authorized under the Water Resources Development Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-662). The mission of the LTRMP is to provide decision makers with information to maintain the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS) as a viable large river ecosystem given its multiple-use character. The long-term goals of the Program are to understand the system, determine resource trends and impacts, develop management alternatives, manage information, and develop useful products. The collection and distribution of aquatic vegetation data aids the Center in meeting these goals.</purpose>
<supplinf>Detailed information on how LTRMP vegetation data are collected is available in the following report; Yin, Y., J. S. Winkelman, and H. A. Langrehr. 2000. <dataqual>
<attracc>
<attraccr>The accuracy of the field data are checked in the field by the crews as they collect their data, in the office as they review the data, and again by the LTRMP’s database administrator and vegetation specialist. When field identification of a particular species is in doubt the field crew brings a sample of the material to the office where they compare it against their office's herbarium collection and/or a vegetation key.</attraccr>
</attracc>
<logic>Three main levels of attribute accuracy checks are performed on the data prior to manual review. The computer program used to store the data while still in the field contains error-checking routines that search out acceptable data responses for most of the database fields. If a questionable entry is made, that entry is flagged and the user is asked to double-check their work. Once the data have been transmitted to the UMESC for entry into the Oracle database, they’re first temporarily loaded into a section of the system that is only accessible by the database administrator and the LTRMP’s vegetation specialist. The database administrator runs several tests against the data to again search out and flag any irregularities that may exist and require correction, the vegetation specialist runs a series of logical routines that searches out and checks for errors among the various data fields. Once all error checks have been completed and the vegetation specialist is satisfied with the data, they’re moved from the temporary holding site to the main database accessible through UMESC’s Web site (www.usgs.gov).</logic>
<posacc>
<horizpa>
<horizpar>The horizontal positional accuracy depends upon the global position system device used to navigate to and record the position of the field crew. Over the years equipment and accuracies have changed, whenever possible differential beacons, post processing, and other procedures have been used to bring the position accuracy of field samples to within 10 meters of the computer selected sampling site.</horizpar>
