Foreword

     EMTC obtained daily water temperatures, mostly from power plants, for Pools 5, 9, 15, 19
and 26 between 1984 and 1997, inclusive.  Of the possible 5,113 daily values for the 14-year
period, 94% were available for Pool 4, 91% for Pool 9, 89% for Pool 15, 100% for Pool 19, and
95% were available for Pool 26.  Missing data for daily temperatures for less than four days were
estimated by linear interpolation of data from the same station.  Estimates of missing data for
four or more days were obtained through linear regression analysis by river mile and data values
from the closest one or two stations.  Winter water temperatures at Pools 5, 9, and 15 were often
as much as five degrees Fahrenheit above freezing, and above the temperatures reported from
Pool 19.  Further investigation found that winter temperature measurements were taken near
heaters for the northern pools.  For this reason, winter temperatures for Pools 5, 9, and 15, that
were higher than the values from Pool 19, were replaced by measurements from Pool 19. 
Reported winter temperatures for Pool 19 were usually within two degrees of freezing.  Water
temperatures for all other dams were estimatied using linear interpolation, by river mile, from the
temperature monitoring locations.  EMTC has used temperature estimates for Lock and Dam 4
for estimates for Lock and Dams 1 - 3.  Those pools are a maximum of 90 miles from Lock and
Dam 4.  After daily water temperatures for each pool were calculated, the measurements were
then averaged for each dam on a weekly basis for the 14-year period.
