| The LFRO has included Lake Pepin (Mississippi River Pool 4) in its study of paddlefish. The density of zooplankton (microscopic aquatic animals) in the lake and its possible influence on the behavior of paddlefish tagged in the Chippewa River has been a part of the study. Telemetry data indicated that most paddlefish radio-tagged in the Chippewa River moved downstream and entered Lake Pepin in late spring and remained there at a time when zooplankton populations typically attain maximum annual densities. Since paddlefish are planktivores, the Chippewa River fish are likely taking advantage of an abundant food resource following their earlier spawning period. Most of these fish return upstream in the Chippewa River by late June. |
